My coworker John told me that his cat was seriously ill--throwing up, lethargic, refusing food, dropping weight. The previously healthy 6-year-old, 15-pound cat had lost a third of her body weight over the last few months. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. Blood tests were clean, and she didn't have any known illnesses. Yet she was a few days from organ failure.

That was a week ago. She's fine now. The solution was... to stop feeding her Purina cat food.

When John told me that, and said that friends of his had the same problem with their cats and Purina cat food, I looked into it. Holy shit. Take a look at the consumer complaints about Purina cat and dog food. This exact same problem has been an issue with Purina pet foods since 2007, but since this summer, the rate of complaints has picked up drastically. People who previously had to problems with Purina are reporting issues. Comment after comment sounds the same:

I've been feeding my three cats Fancy Feast canned food Chopped Grill Feast for many years. They have always devoured their meal and licked the plates clean. Last week, I noticed they did not want to eat much and went from plate to plate, ate a little. Next day, none of them would eat it. I kept trying new cans. What they did eat made them vomit and one cat was lethargic for days. I refuse to buy any more of this food. It's very scary. I don't know what is wrong with the food, but I fear it has toxins in it. I switched to another brand and the cats are fine now. Did anyone else experience this?

-----

My dogs have been eating Purina Dog Chow (green bag) for about four years. They used to eat only Iams, but due to financial issues, we had to go with a cheaper brand. The last bag I purchased was about a week and a half ago. My 14 years old Labrador has vomited about 5-6 times and my German Shepherd has vomited about 4 times. Something is wrong with this food! The food has a kind of metallic smell to it. It just does not smell right. I'm taking it back to the pet store. I am changing my dogs' food, it's just not worth taking the chance to save a few dollars.

-----

We purchased a large bag of Purina One Salmon dry cat food to give to a needy pet owner. She emailed us a couple of days later ,to say that there were maggots, lots of them with what looked to be like strands or webs with more dead gnats or flies, pieces of web in the food and "shells" of gnats or flies in the bag. Cats would not eat much of the food and, fortunately, they did not get sick. The store had noticed this problem in other bags and was willing to swap out.

-----

I purchased a 34 lb bag of Purina One Smartblend dog food every three to four weeks for my two Labradors. The last bag I purchased seemed fine until I noticed a new infestation of little black bugs. Upon further inspection through the contents of the bag, I noticed clusters of white "eggs" adhered to quite a bit of the food. Some of these clusters contained larvae in the process of hatching. I immediately threw out the remaining contents of the bag but did save samples for my vet.

We went out of town last weekend and had friends dog sit for us. We originally attributed their lethargy and random vomiting to separation anxiety. Although they are doing better, I am still concerned and will be watching them closely. As stated, I saved samples of the infested dog food for our vet in the event that anything results from this issue.

-----

I recently switched to the Friskies Poultry Variety pack (32 cans) that says it must be used by August 2013 (12281789 09:31 lo61237) sku (050000454242). I have 5 cats and feeding them this food, I noticed some of them throwing up. There's nothing in it but liquids, no hair ball, no food, nothing. My cats range from 8 weeks to 13 years old.

I switched my own cats to Purina a couple of months ago, and their coats look so much better than they did on the old brand of cat food... but Buffy has started vomiting stomach liquids. Purina and Fancy Feast are off the menu. Permanently.

I have no idea why this isn't news. But if you're feeding your pets any Purina brand, please don't wait for media confirmation that something is going on. Stop feeding your pets Purina immediately.

Yikes. Reposting just to be safe. I have fed Penny Purina without problems but I'm not going to anymore. Schroedie has been on Authority canned food and that's what I'll keep buying even if it costs a bit more.

Clark can stand up today and is feeling much better.. Also the Humane Society is investigating pressing charges against the people who did this to him. I didn't realize this but the animal cruelty cops aren't funded by the state, but by donations. You can help stick it to Clarks former "owners" by going to PSPCA.ORG and donating for "humane law enforcement".

Glad this brave kitty is doing better.

This is Barnaby. He's about six, neutered, housebroken, and sweet as can be. He also needs a home in the Dallas area, though transportation three or four hours farther afield can be arranged.

Problem is, he's FIV+, meaning he will live a normal lifespan, but cannot be around other non-FIV+ cats.

He is being kept in a fosterer's bathroom, and is understandably sad about this.

I know a lot of y'all are Texas people, or know Texas people. If you could spread the word to help find him a home, that'd be awesome.

Presumably his people just put him outside once they found out he was sick. Bastidges!

The story is here: http://ashbet.livejournal.com/1914394.html

And this is what he looks like. Such a beautiful boy!

If you know of someone who wants this beautiful boy, please speak up. If I didn't have Penny (and I'm SO utterly glad that I do, she's the light of my life!) I'd take him in a heartbeat.

NOT happy!

And yes, you damn betcha I sent off an email to ThePetPlace right quickly.

Penny *loves* the Undercover Mouse and played with it several times, making me laugh and Star as well, when she was here. It stopped and I figured that it was just the batteries. So I bought more AA batteries when I shopped this evening.

I took down the toy and loaded new batteries in it (yes, correctly) and she was looking at it with great anticipation. When I put it on the floor and hit the switch; nothing. No red light, nothing. She's disappointed and I'm IRATE.

You mean to tell me that a 10+ year old, front declawed cat can break a $20 toy in a week?

Yeah, they'd better make this right or I will make a big stink.

OH, that's right....I already am.
rowangolightly: (Pretty Princess Penny)
Someone has invented a better cat litter tray and system. And it's not at all expensive! I've had and used the electric rake kind and HATED it; made more of a mess to clean up than just scooping, plus with (at the time) ten cats, the box could never keep up. And it was NOISY and smelly and expensive to buy the liners.

This seems like the perfect thing. I'm just not sure that Penny would go into the opening of the litter box.

He built a better mousetrap...so to speak.
rowangolightly: (Dog Hug Howl)
...which, of course, I knew. But this is really sad news. And I can't help at all since I'm basically homeless myself, except for the charity of dear friends. It sucks all over.

But if anyone has the money and inclination to help these nice people, please do so.

The Pet Connection is shutting its doors.

Effective immediately, The Pet Connection is closing its adoption center Mondays through Fridays until enough money can be raised to reopen. We will still be open on weekends and adoptions can be done by appointment during the week. In the past three months we have been under extensive scrutiny from several different agencies. We have been inspected by the state veterinary board, the state animal health department, the fire department, and the city because of “anonymous complaints” or “routine inspections”. We may have made someone mad or it may all just be a strange coincidence, but either way, we have needed to use the majority of our time and resources handling these repeated inspections. Lawyer fees and extra staff time have drained our bank account.
We need help to raise enough money to reopen our doors. We want to continue to help the thousands of animals we help each year through our adoption center and clinic. We want to continue to provide assistance to other rescue shelters and rescue groups so that they can help more pets. But we also need to prepare ourselves in case we need to shut our doors forever. As hard as it is, we are currently no longer taking in cats or large dogs to prepare ourselves in case we have to close for good. Many organizations and animals rely on our care.
With enough money we can re-open our doors to the public every day and can begin taking in dogs and cats into our shelter again. This bump in the road only has to be a small set back to the overall good that we provide to this community.
Please contact Melody Kelso and/or Jason Huff for details on how to help and/or for details on an informational meeting that will be held in the next few days to explain the circumstances to those interested. Donations can be made at www.thepetconnection.net or by coming to our facility. Jack 105 will be having a live remote at our facility on Saturday from 10A-12N to help raise needed sponsorships. Address: 5918 Broadmoor, Mission. KS 66202.

Here's a couple random images, found while I was looking through my files for stuff.

This one is called "Minko Pwned"

This is Penny and Simon:

Here is Penny, as usual, being adorable:

And this Renfaire one that I've been meaning to post. I LOVE this shot. For those who know Queen Mum at KC, this is a priceless shot. She never fails to greet me as, "My favorite daughter." Awwww! I have no idea what we were talking about but it must've been funny.

Shortly after returning from the weekend at Heartland, we unloaded the van and started putting everything away. As I'd intended, we brought the throne in (yes, the very chair that [livejournal.com profile] apocalypticbob gave me that I spent almost two weeks refinishing) to put in the living room. I couldn't see any point of going to all that work and letting it sit in the garage!

That evening on the way in to bed after most of the lights were out, I was making sure all the cats were inside, particularly little Princess Penny since we'd been going in and out of the garage. I looked in the usual places and didn't see her (I know you're way ahead of me here!)

When I spotted her, I nearly fell down laughing. Where else should the Princess be but in the throne?

*nods* It's obviously her's now!

Quickly...

I had the kitchen window open for awhile to air out. Apparently poor stupid Nell jumped out without me noticing.

Now she's by the fence in the side yard, looking at me through the window, like, "How'd I get out here and now what do I do?" ...If she was only intelligent enough to put those feelings into thoughts, which is highly doubtful.

Perhaps if I open the window again, she'll jump back in.

Silly kitty.

Well, no Callanetics today and boy, do I feel it. The lack of endorphins has me feeing blah...so tomorrow, you betcha I'm exercising first thing in the morning!

But at least today saw the accomplishment of one more legal step; I now have my military ID so I'm legally a military wife. Oh, poo...still need to call and see what the hold up is in the insurance. They sent a form saying, "we're canceling the request for insurance due to lack of vital information" but didn't say WHAT vital information they're lacking; no, that would be too easy, wouldn't it? *eyeroll*

I even sewed today; finished another nifty whistle bag. Yes, Mel...it's purple, red and gold and GORGEOUS! I'm very happy with it, not to photograph it for the site. I'm getting quicker with them which is part of the whole point.

And finally, as promised...precious Piewacket pictures!
right back here 'cause I'm nice! )

Only thing I'd change is the weather, dammit. Too cloudy to see the lunar eclipse but boy, can I feel it!

Oy!

Erm...anybody want an adorable kitten?

She's about 7-8 months old, a white, gold and black tortoise-shell calico; bright, cuddly, very friendly, very vocal and loves to ride on shoulders. She's a gorgeous little cat; very distinctive markings and we're quite sure she's not been around here until today.

I 'met' her this afternoon when I tried to get into the van to run errands. I walked outside and my back wheel well was mrwwing at me. When I wiggled my fingers, this darling little furrbaby came trotting right over, talking and wanting to be loved; I picked her up and she purred like an engine and climbed right onto my shoulder. *sigh* We CANNOT have another cat, nor can Amber but she's in heat at this age and so friendly that I'm terrified she's going to get run over. While I was trying to leave, she followed me right into the house so I took a scoop of food out the front porch and she dove into it like she's starving. I think somebody dropped her off.

Amber and I talked it over when I got home, 'cause she did the same thing with her and she called the vet. When asked a name, Amber gave them "George" which made me guffaw. Amber is fronting the cost so she's taking George to our vet to get her checked, to see if and when she can be spayed and then we MUST find another home for her. Amber will keep her upstairs tonight which will freak out Bobbi who usually sleeps in her room.

She's a darling girl and wants either Amber or me to be Mommy quite desperately. And we absolutely cannot, will not keep her, as sweet as she is. Yes, we took pictures and will post them just as soon as Amber gets back.

Please, somebody....give this little one a home!

From the party, the first entry in the "cute Christmas cat" contest.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] brotherwilliam! Yes, it has been uploated to the LOLCats site.

I know there are some other pics of it and there were some other great suggestions for slogans. I also took a couple of poor stupid Nell in the window behind the tree.

Great stuff...

Two funny things:

Princess Penny loves boxes/bins/laundry baskets, right? At the moment, she's determinedly working at getting inside the empty Pepsi cube box that was opened just enough for one can to be removed.

Poor stupid Nell was watching a bird (or something) out the kitchen window while sitting on the table. She fell asleep sitting up and relaxed to the point that she slumped suddenly, hit her head on the back of the chair and had to scramble to not fall off of the table.

Cats....who needs TV?

*sigh*

IWONTKILLTHECATIWONTKILLTHECATIWONTKILLTHECAT!

Just finished vacuuming the upstairs (LOVE the new Bissell, the lift off cannister ROCKS for stairs) after having mopped the kitchen floor. Of course, I have to move the litter box in order to mop the kitchen floor.

Nell came and pooped on the floor while I was upstairs sweeping.

IWONTKILLTHECAT but damned if it's not tempting right now!

Awwww!

Ok, this was so damned cute I just hafta post it.

I just came inside after shoveling dirt and then planting some of the iris bulbs. Penny was out there 'helping' me and came in when I did. She just walked over in front of my keyboard, head-butted my chin and then started licking my cheek.

Yeah, this is definitely my baby now!

Thanks to Br. William; here's a pic of her loafing on the back of the loveseat.

Now I gotta go get some kitty litter and some potting soil. I think we need to turn over the compost heap and let it sit some more before I take anything more out of it.

As I sit here eating some breakfast before I run to the bank, ye gods tired and weary after the weekend, I just had to share another cat funny.

Those of you who are accustomed to this household know that several of the cats like to come and go through the dining room window, by which I sit to work on the laptop here. Minka, in particular, prefers the personal service of me opening the window so she can exit or enter the house. Already this morning she's come in that way for morning 'tuna' at 6am and then back out soon as I came out here.

Just a bit ago, I had Penny, BrokenTail and poor stupid Nell all up on the table and Minka outside wanting back in. So I opened the window about half way. Minka wanted in at the precise time that BrokenTail wanted out...you guessed it. They collided headfirst right in the door opening; Minka fell back, shaking her head as if "where did that bus go" and BrokenTail, who is a bit larger and more hefty, went on out. Then Minka came back in and Penny went out.

I had to recover my composure before I could go close the window.

Cats....who needs TV for amusement?

...quick story between mopping the kitchen floor and going out to fight with the bermuda grass a little more. And after that hopefully, I can finish the official wedding post.

This past Friday, after Bruce got home and we got stuff together, we were busily packing for the trip up to KC. We'd decided to take the car since it gets better gas milage than the van, especially as there's only two of us coming up this season.

We got everything in the trunk, checked the house, made sure everything was locked and the packing list completed. Then we got into the car and took off with the radio on, as usual. As we went down our block when we heard a quiet "meow." We looked at one another, unsure if it was coming from the radio or elsewhere. Bruce turned off the radio and we heard, "meow!" Bruce said, "BrokenTail, right?" and I answered, "Yep, I think so too."

He turned the car around in a driveway and heard another "MEOW" as we headed back for the house. I said, "Hold on, baby, we'll be right there" and got "ME-WOW!" as a response. Soon as we pulled to a stop in the driveway, he popped the lid and I ran around to get the poor cat out of the trunk.

Who should pop out of the back of the trunk, looking entirely indignant about the stupid humans shutting her in, but little miss Princess Penny. I picked her up and took her back into the house, petting and cooing and trying to calm her imperial highness's distressed feeling.

Then we closed the garage door and laughed our way back up the block again, heading for KC.
rowangolightly: (Minko Flower)
...and no, I'm not talking about Bruce here but this'll surprise nobody who knows him (the cat, I mean!)

Last evening, two young blonde neighborhood ladies, about 6 and 10, rang our doorbell just before supper. I went to answer it, knowing immediately that they were selling something for their school; think I bought flower bulbs from then last year.

The younger of the two was just bending to pick up Minko, and of course, he did his smug cat-grin and looked right at home dangling from her hugging arms. She said, "I'm really good with animals!" And she was too. I said, "That's Minko, he's very friendly."

She said, without blinking, "Oh, we call him Tiger."

What a slut he is....all over the neighborhood, answering to who-knows how-many names, happy as a clam!

*ROFL*

Now I'm off for my morning walk, second day in a row (woohoo!) around the big block here, carrying a two pound weight in each hand. No, that's not much but it gives me just the added cardio workout that I need. YOU try going up that hill along the back of the block with more than that!

Here you can see part of the new costume and that the necklace from Sapphire&Sage is lovely but just doesn't work on me.
