I've also found that the South, and yes, I think some parts of even Missouri can be considered border-line South, has a much greater percentage of smokers than the North, for some reason.
I think it's still a holdover from when it was almost entirely tobacco country. Old habits die hard, especially the addictive ones, and the culture encourages smoking.
