...thinkin' while I'm ripping off the trim from this sleeve. You see, I was so happy about being able to sew this sleeve's trim on by machine (after spending 5 hours on the way to Austin hand-sewing the other sleeve's trim) since I had to alter the sleeves 'cause they didn't hang right when she tried them on yesterday. *sigh* Looking for silver linings to that particular rain cloud. But in machine sewing it at midnight, I was too tired to realize that I'd used the red trim and not the green trim. Hense the long time to reflect whilst ripping...

Considering the latest little flap over the music interview in the university paper after the Norman Med. Faire; that's what got me started. Some folk take themselves just a tad too seriously, and that's some musicians, some SCA folk, some faire performers, some of any kind of group anywhere. There are presuppostions about people who play different sorts of instruments, for instance, as opposed to those who are singers and the heirarchy involved there.

There are all sorts of reasons to perform music from wanting to research and reproduce faithfully what was done in centuries past to the simple joy of creating music that people can listen to and enjoy, be moved by, smile, giggle or guffaw at; be transported or entertained or moved...

And there are some folk in the one point of view that distain those in any other point of view; again, a challenge you can find in any other hobby, vocation or discussion topic as well. Let me say this about that; I respect good musicianship and good stagecraft wherever I find it. Usually the more talented the performer/musician, in my experience, the more gracious, personable and downright lovely they are. Of course, there are exceptions such as the brilliant American operatic soprano who, despite having a glorious voice, was such a bitch that the Met fired her. But I digress.

On the other hand, if you're all about making connections, making friends, helping others along the path as you've been helped, focussing on the joy of the music brings, being aware of the magic that happens during such times and riding the wave what happens from there.

So my point here is this. I just love music, particularly folk music and Celtic music. I love performing. I am an unashamed Entertainer; that's what I do. I love to make beautiful or fun or happy or bawdy or sad or silly music. I love to see the looks on the faces of those being entertained. I love moving people, changing their moods or their lives to whatever degree, with the music. I love being able to make babies stop crying and listen entranced to a lullaby. I love singing an old faire favorite and seeing folk beam and sing along or close their eyes and get lost in their own happy reminiscences. I love singing a love song and watching a couple sing the words to one another.

This is, in and of itself, a noble calling and just plain lots of fun. It's called being a Bard. And I'm happy with that. It's all really pretty simple, isn't it

I'm....

...an evil woman. I'm luring more friends into LiveJournal. Wish I could get my sister on here, too, dammit.
