Found over at Doc Jeff's place.

Busy, but things are good here. Despite a bit of surprising fall-out from Friday's Samhain email, I feel great and clear-headed; it was absolutely the right thing to do. I feel like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I'm being realistic about what can be accomplished which is also a good thing. I've made an executive decision to do a short-cut on the chair and to not finish the big-assed fancy new sleeves. The trim arrived on Friday but this morning I discovered that I'm out of one of the ribbons so it's just not possible to make the other sleeve without going into manic mode and it's just not worth it. I'll be just fine with the sleeves I've worn with this costume for the last year and a half. The long term weather report looks great; clear and mostly sunny in the mid-to-high 60's.

So this morning we've finalized the site plan and I'm now working on the schedule a bit. One cool thing I discovered on Friday is that Travis Fessler of the Pickled Brothers Side Show will be on the Tonight Show on Friday evening. Yep, what great publicity both for him and for Faire a la Carte. He called, all concerned that he couldn't come in until about noon on Saturday but I reassured him that I was cool with it; it's not as though we have a shortage of entertainment for the Heartland Faire! He was thrilled that I was flexible but good heavens, what good does it do to be anal about something like that? It's a great opportunity for him and since he's going to try to mention the faire this weekend and Faire a la Carte in general, great PR for us as well.

Why is he going to be on the Tonight Show, you ask? Well, our buddy Travis broke a World's Record for something. His 19year old half-brother broke a juggling record last for juggling upside down. So they've since been in sort of a world-record-competition. He warned me that it was sorta gross but I told him I used to be married to a Vaudevillian so I was pretty gross-resistant. Then he told me that he put 11 hissing Madagascar cockroaches into his mouth. I went "EW!" and he chuckled and said, "Well, I warned you" Here: http://www.pickledbrothers.com/ where you can see a video of it. So yeah, that got him onto Leno's show. I asked him if his brother was pissed that he got a record for ick when his own was for skill and he chuckled again and said, "Yeah, pretty much but then, I'm also pretty nervous that he's going to be driving my car from Kentucky to Oklahoma by himself!" I'm looking forward to meeting them both.

So things are proceeding apace. We're done with the site plan; tomorrow I'll take it and get it reduced and copied, posted and sent out. Now to work on the schedule and then final details. It's all coming together.

Also, anybody who's talked about vending; seems like there are more folk who've talked about it than have turned in vendor apps....last chance, really. We *need* clothing vendor, wooden sword vendor, jewelry vendor, leather and other sorts of gift and practical items vendors. Having vendors just show up on Friday is something I dread but I know will happen. Why does everybody wait until the last minute?

So...upward and onward!

Boo!

Here's a timely idea!

Leftover Halloween candy? Make a cake!

Halloween candyIf you're trick or treating with the kids tonight, chances are you're going to have either a.) your kids eating a ton of candy and getting sick or hyper, or b.) enough candy to last the next 38 days. Besides eating the candy bar by bar, piece by piece, what else can you do with it?

How about a Leftover Candy Cake? This recipe from CDKitchen takes all of your leftover candy, whether it's chocolate or hard candies and makes it into a bundt cake. Check out the ingredients and the instructions after the jump.

2 cups coarsely chopped candy
2 3/4 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
8 oz unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 large eggs
1/4 tsp almond extract
1 cup sour cream

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Butter a bundt pan and dust with fine bread crumbs (wait...I don't even see bread crumbs on the ingredients list...hmmm). Shake out excess. In another bowl, sift together flour, salt, and baking soda. In another bowl, cream butter until soft, then alternate adding dry ingredients with sour cream. Place 1 1/2 cups of this mixture into pan. Add candies to the rest of the batter (folding in). Pour over plain batter. Bake for about an hour. Cool for 15 minutes. Cover pan with rack, flip over, and remove cake. Let it cool a little while longer. You can then add confectioner's sugar on top if you want.

Note: I bought WAAAY too much candy; I'm still accustomed to the number of houlligans, er kids, that I had come trick or treating in KC.
