Ooooh cool...

You see the durnedest things on the google ads! I HAD to click on this...

http://www.amvardo.com/caravan/

I WANT one...but I certainly wouldn't paint it as plainly as that one, no siree!

[identity profile] ladybarnard.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
eeeeee...I want one too! They're so cute. They look like little Hobbit-houses on wheels.

[identity profile] ladybarnard.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I think Carl from Empty Hats has one of these. I'm pretty sure [livejournal.com profile] skiafoxmorgan has borrowed it to travel in.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, he does and she has...

[identity profile] grnvixen.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean like one of these :):

http://www.boswell-romany-museum.com/museumViews.htm

http://www.atchintan.freeserve.co.uk/gallery.htm

http://gypsywaggons.co.uk/varsuk6.htm

At one time I thought they might be fun for SCA camping but, technically, the really great decorate ones were post-period.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooooh yeah....very, very cool.

[identity profile] cplady.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...it would look much better painted more brightly with much more detail.

It appears the covering is actually a large winter pool cover which is perfect!

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is a large tarp! I read in one of the blogs how a single tarp is just a bit too narrow to extend all the way to the overhang over the door so they were talking about shortening the length. NO, just put a french seam in there and waterproof it and have as much length as you want.

*sigh*

I know Beloved won't go for building one of these, but a girl can dream, can't she?

[identity profile] cplady.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But a winter pool cover is not the same as a tarp, they come in very large sizes, are totally water/weather proof and come in COLORS!

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Of COURSE, that's brilliant! Hey, our's isn't waterproof...did we get a bad one? I'm SO new to pool ownership, I wouldn't know...

[identity profile] cplady.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It really depends...there are some heavy duty mesh covers that work primarily to keep debris out of your pool over winter, and then there are the heavy duty waterproof covers like we have. The waterproof ones are more expensive.

You know, I'd love to build one of these things just so I could paint it!

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding! That would be so much fun...

And hey, now I know a bit more about pool covers!

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, in reading, I see they do allow for water drainage so that really wouldn't work to waterproof the top of a vardo. Hmmm...also, looks like they painted it; wonder what that would do. Ok,ok...getting away from this to get the WORK done that I must around here. But dayum, what a cool idea!

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
OH, ok....I see. Oh, how cool is that?

[identity profile] oldwolf.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe, cool! Now all it needs is a bath/shower, internet, TV, bed, bbq, and yer all set!

Oh, and I got a spam from this site: http://www.gaelicthemes.net/

Maybe it can help with your sewing et,al.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, of course it would have to have plumbing, internet and cooking facilities! And AIR CONDITIONING! Could be done, could be....

And yes, that is one of the web-sites I already have bookmarked.

[identity profile] oldwolf.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... ever think of making a post of all those links???

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, to be entirely honest, this gets into a squiffy area.
See some of those are business leads that I've worked hard to accumulate. I've developed research skills over the years, before it came to as simple a matter as a google search.
Sure, I share them when someone asks about a certain subject and I list the appropriate ones in my costuming workshop for Faires. But posting all of them somehow makes me feel squicky, sort of like giving away patterns that I've developed and spent so much time drafting.

[identity profile] tapestry01.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I could SO take one of those to Burning Man!

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! *heh* Boy, do the wheels start turning; we could 'group build' one and then take turns using it....ohhhhh man!

[identity profile] joegoda.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You know... I was just thinking that.

[identity profile] ayeamspartacus.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
How awesome! Especially for you renfair folk.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, now the only problem there would be adequate hang-up space for costumes!

[identity profile] joegoda.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was looking for an image to use for BP&G's wagon, I stumbled upon those caravans. Very cool, indeed, but too, too small for what I needed, and too ordinary looking, all roundish and such. The construction looks pretty easy, specially if you've done any sort of frame work.

Hmmm. If I only had a million dollars......

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding....but if you look at the links Catherine provided; very nifty and not plain at all!

[identity profile] youngraven.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Erm...make one. Do.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Riiiiight....with which fortune?

[identity profile] sherwood21.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeee!! So cute! Is it wrong that I want one to live in?

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not at all....I can see it. Ye gods, got a much more candid story of what it'd be like after listening to a musician at O'Flaherty's last month talk about being raised in that tradition in Ireland. He and his family were itinerant musicians by tradition; he had 10 brothers and sisters who were all born and raised in one of those. Their only income was his father's busking as they travelled around. I can only imagine...

It was truly the best, most memorable event of that whole weekend; listening to him telling his stories of how it was to live like that, the joys of it and the sorrows. They were horribly prejudiced against, as you can imagine. But really, after hearing his stories and seeing the emotions cross his face; doing it now as a lark would be one thing; living that way as a 3rd generation would be something else again.

I think there are some vacations you can take in Ireland or Wales in these.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I gather..

Now THAT would be fun! 'Course, I'd also like the staying in castles thing too....I'm such an eclectic soul!

you are not alone...

[identity profile] pastmagic.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually contemplated building one last year from plans found online. I started looking at tiny houses (http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/home.htm) and that led me to the Vardo. There is something about living in a small space that makes me feel good.

More recently [livejournal.com profile] renniemom and I have been thinking about a teardrop trailer after seeing a recent show on the travel channel.

Re: you are not alone...

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruce and I have lusted over trailers and campers for oh, the whole time we've been together. I even considered remodeling a school bus, which are remarkably fuel efficient and inexpensive, all things considered. But the remodeling costs would be as high, to do it the way we'd want, as building a vardo from scratch or just buying a camper.

Dreams, all of them, at this point...

[identity profile] lurkitty.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The Gypsies used to camp about an hour north of here on the banks of the river every summer. A lot of their caravans looked like that, but, as you said a lot more colorful, and always strewn with colorful clothes drying in the sun.

They don't come any more. There's a housing development there and city ordinances prohibit camping.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ach, what a shame. I knew/know some Rom folk who used to do KCRF; tighly-knit family (as they had to be) but dear folk and SO very giving and loyal once you'd won their trust.

[identity profile] lurkitty.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. There may be a few communities in the hills that welcome them, but mostly people have become so xenophobic that all travelers are met with distrust these days.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's also not just now-a-days, truly. Right after O'Flaherty's I posted about a session I listened in on with a wonderful Irish Uillean piper, Mickey Dunn, who comes from an itinerant Irish musical famiy. He and his 10 brothers and sisters were born and raised in a vardo, travelling all over Ireland with his father the sole wage earner from his music. The stories of bigotry and hatred he told were heart-breaking. But he's an amazing man, so loving and sharing and talented.

This seems to be a theme lately...must be telling me something, since I found that Vardo link today. Hmmm...

[identity profile] lurkitty.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh - and speaking of travelers in general - we are going to see Alexander James Adams for the first time this weekend at Orycon on Sunday. Should be a delight!

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, how wonderful! If you get the chance please give him and Corey our love!

[identity profile] lurkitty.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Will do - if the chance arises - the crowd is usually dense here. But the concert is at an odd time - 10 AM Sunday morning. Hmmm...

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh*

Ya know, one of our band goals is to start doing more Cons... but damn, how to fit the weekends and expenses in!

[identity profile] srgmatt.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
That is really CLEVER! I've been wanting to get a camper for Scarborough, but this is actually quite a whimsical and very reasonably-priced alternative. Plus, I get to build and decorate it MY way (much more prettily than olive drab - yuck!).

Thanks so much for posting this - I'd never have come across this myself...

Oh, I'm so glad! I get to see pictures, right?

[identity profile] akasha63.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
That is a neat damn trailer! And yes, I too would have to make a lot more colorful and add jingly bells to it. Ok, fine, I am odd, but bells make everything better...hehehehe

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
*lol* See, I'm all into the painting and the decorative stuff but bells? Hell no...I have an aversion to stuff that makes noise. Like alarm clocks and cell phone alerts in the middle of the night. *sigh* Especially when hubby is a SysAdmin...
