Found this over at [livejournal.com profile] gamera_spinning's and whole-heartedly agree with him.

Short version: Campbell's bought two two-page advertisements in the December and January issues of The Advocate, which features a lesbian couple and their son, and apparently the Catholic Church thinks this is going to destroy the fabric of civilization and the folks at catholic.com are apparently asking folks to call Campbell's to protest their "supporting the homosexual agenda".

Here's the nonsense over at Catholic Forums, wanting folk to contact the CEO of Campbell's to pressure him to take the ads down. I don't think so.

You can see the oh-so-horrific ads here:

I now have a strange desire to create a fake soup add featuring two scantily-clad lesbians in their kitchen, one very suggestively finger-feeding soup dregs to the other.

Campbells -- It'll make you want to lick the bowl.

I've long felt that one inanity deserves another.

And you know, if I had a likely kitchen and sultry lesbian couple, I just might. Don't, though. And I'm not going to go googling for images to splice, while a three year old wants my attention on less snarky things. ;-) Someone else will just have to put it together, and share the credit.

Why is the Catholic church reading The Advocate, a magazine specifically geared to the GLBT community?

Oh yeah - the priests subscribe, right?

There's probably some kind of formal position for hunting down these 'threats' -- someone gets to moan and groan about the sacrifice they make, doing this for their community...and then lock themselves in their office and...moan and groan. Kinda like how Bush had his own little workforce of porn hunters.

Yes, there are - they're called The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congregation_for_the_Doctrine_of_the_Faith) and Opus Dei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opus_dei).

Also, note nuggets 5 & 6 here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congregation_for_the_Doctrine_of_the_Faith#Recent_opinions_and_publications

I don't know why, but #6 makes me giggle...I have no idea what to say about 5, though.....

CDF is the modern name for what used to be the Holy Office of the Inquisition.

Oh, THAT'S reassuring! /sarcasm

So the Mormons and the Catholics each think that the other is "the Great Whore" ....wow, how nice that everybody can get along, ya know?

Clinkerbuilt's Rules of Religious Validity:

1. The Divine does not require spin-control.

2. The Divine does not experience cash-flow issues.

3. The validity of any religion is directly proportional to its tolerance of non-believers.

Any questions?

Sadly, you're too trusting -- I have to operate in a litigious environment all the time, so I have to give no room for maneuver.

My version of that, incidentally, goes:

Why? Be.

I have found that to be true in the last few years but I still prefer it as a default trait in preference to bitterness; at one point that was an either/or proposition for me.

I'll extend trust, just so far, until it is proven one way or another. That seems to work fairly well for me. As, head of an entertainment business, a Minister and when playing Queen, being open and trusting is what I need to be. I have to take it on an individual basis and take the risk.

There's a reason I'm no longer Catholic. While there are some things I love about the religion (well one...Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve), the hypocrisy and hellfire and brimstone was just too much. But remember, not all xtians are bigoted, prejudiced, homophobic crazies. Some of us are actually good people. Well, depending on how you define "good."

Indeed. My husband was raised (thankfully in a rather open-minded diosces) Catholic, and while he's explored many other traditions just as I always have, still refers to himself as such, mostly because that's the reflexive context he comes from, when dealing with core concepts. (Bearing in mind that the core concepts are nearly the same ones shared in the best of most traditions, and don't involve any of the hateful blather layered on over the millenia of human interpretation.) But I assure you, he's only bad in the best of ways. ;-)

And people should bash Catholics all you want. After 2000 years, they are kind of used to it.

From: [identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com
I only bash those who ask for it with their bad behavior and I do not view this as bashing but merely answering an attack with a counter-attack. It's entirely up to you if you think this sort of behavior is laudatory for a supposedly Loving church to indulge in. I am not "bashing" the whole Catholic church, just the behavior in this case.

*shrugs* Do you hear me bitching about how Catholics behaved historically? No, and you won't. I'd rather focus on the here and now.

Why counter attack when you can merely sidestep and let the other person look like an idiot to a confined number of people. Now his voice has been expanded to include your friends list.

It is one person on a Catholic message board, and from the looks of the first 3 pages of replies in that message board, he is alone.

Absolutely alone.

You and the person that you pulled the info from both had the exact same opportunity to turn this into a positive experience by simply taking the Campbell's ad and saying, "Email Campbells and applaud their marketing and willingness to have a voice on current issues."

Instead, you lumped Catholics into a group with a poster on a message forum. If Benedict had said something, or the USCCB had made a statement, then, yeah, it is the Catholic Church. It isn't. It is one moron.

Buffalo speaks for Catholic.com the exact same that I do for Sixapart and Livejournal.

I didn't say anything about his behavior. Good or bad. He is entitle to his opinion. Whether it stinks or not. I have never considered the Catholic Church to be loving.

But your post has certain had lots of positive Catholic replies added to it.

My goal was to garner some support for the beleaguered head of Campbells; this is a tough enough business environment in which to do business as it is. I have not sent any hate mail to the Catholic church nor the forum under which this was posted.

Loving is as loving does.

To me the saddest thing is that gist of the little blurb about this couple is they have a long standing Christmas tradition that they are sharing as a family. That doesn't exactly point to the deterioration of home and harth, does it? I don't understand why this matters so much to some people. If it's not hurting you then why are you trying so hard to hurt them? I know, I know, I'm preaching to the choir. But them more I try to understand the more baffled I become. It makes me want to cry.

"Bashing" is a hate crime, based on ignorance, like what these people are doing to gays. Standing up against an agressor, to defend your right, or the rights of others, to be happy in their own way, in defence of a group that have done nothing to deserve agression, is not bashing. It's our moral obligation. If the Catholic Church or anyone else wants to dish hate they have to expect the return. Defence of love in return for hate. Whose the villan here?

We buy stock pretty much every other grocery trip, Swanson's is our preferred brand. We have from time to time subscribed to the Advocate.

I understand your latest ad has raised some controversy and I wanted to let you know that in response we (myself and my Catholic partner) will ONLY buy Swanson's broth for the next year to help show our support of you showing all sorts of chefs and families in your ads.

Thanks for actually advertising to your customers,

A very good and well-reasoned email. Unfortunately, I got a "failure to deliver" notification three times, so I assume that he's changed his email address. Most unfortunate, because he can't see the supportive emails that come in addition to the negative ones.
