Having finally found my dandilion puller on Friday, I went to evict the dandilions from the garden and back yard, only to discover that a lot of those little yellow flowers were NOT dandilions at all but were attached to what looks like very low-growing strawberry plants.

So it seems that we have strawberry plants spreading in the back yard that have yellow flowers; never heard of that before. I googled and found that there are strawberry plants with pink flowers so we'll see what happens. Wild strawberries, yum! Who knows if they'll produce anything but it'll be interesting to watch.

And second, does anybody know anything about the nifty-looking Irish pub called Granny's Attic in Tahlequah? It's a lovely building just a block from the college campus. It is clean and bright but not open. I've been by there 3 or 4 times and the lights are on and the place is clean and stocked and looks completely ready for business. It's just not open. We didn't take the time to try to find someone to ask about it; wanted to head home after Wharrgarbl, but every time I drive by the place, I get curiouser and curiouser. The website shows an impressive line-up for two months, presumably from last year but there is no year listed, somewhere in google reviews I found a listing for a concert with the Elders in 2009 but nothing on the web-site. The owner is listed as Sam Egan but the email doesn't go through. It would be an awesome venue for Queen's Gambit but not if the place isn't open...

Now I'm off to Sertomas to get the CDs shrink-wrapped. BOY, can I feel the digging I did in the garden yesterday and the late night since Bruce had a nap but I didn't. Tired; but muchly to do.

Probably so...

All our wild strawberries, and we have a lot, have yellow flowers. You'll probably get a lot of little berries, but they're very small and not as tasty as one would hope.

I think Jimmy (comment above) is right...Indian strawberries. Although I think I am somewhat offended at that name, I am.

Shouldn't be: not like Indian Summer or Indian Giver: they were named for their origins.

Well, I do get very tired of cultural biases, things that were mis-named based on how our ancestors mistakenly thought about aboriginal societies.

Oh, I agree. Just not this time.

Yeah, just like the other weed that is trying to take over the WHOLE yard; completely immune to Roundup but getting Bruce to believe that is another matter.

I used to hang out at Granny's Attic all the time when I lived in Tahlequah years ago; my house was just around the corner (within staggering distance). It's been seriously rebuilt since then. I hope it's still open.

It isn't...but it is a nifty building that has obviously been seriously rebuilt. I hope to find out more and will let you know. We'd LOVE to figure this out and get a gig there.

There is also a really nifty stone castle-looking 3-story house just up the hill from there, overlooking the campus that is for sale. Damned tempting...IF we had the money and IF Tahlequah was a bit more prosperous.

Oh, that's for SALE ???
Oooohhh... I've been admiring it for years, but never thought it would hit the market !

Yep, Bruce spotted it and we drove past it. There was a big for sale sign in the yard. Would love to take a look on the inside of it; it just screams B & B to me.

I'm so sorry: those aren't strawberries, they are mock strawberries, native to India. see http://www.missouriplants.com/Yellowalt/Duchesnea_indica_page.html
They are endemix in my old garden.

Ah. Well, they add to the mix of nasty weeds in my yard. I don't know what the other one it, but it's a much greater problem; actually choked out the grass and other things we have planted. I think a trip to my Coop is in order.

Ah, thank you! We have those all over our front yard in western Massachusetts!

Yeah, I suspected they were not exclusive to Missouri.

Now I'll search the same site for the nasty weed that's trying rather successfully to take over our yard. And no, RoundUp doesn't even touch it.

I remember how excited I was to see "tiny strawberries" when we moved here -- and how disappointed I was by the taste!

I was similarly thrilled to find Concord grapes growing at the edge of the woods. They smelled heavenly ... but were really SOUR! :(

We have concord grapes at the side of the house and they're wonderful, if sparce. I ordered, received and have yet to plant, another vine of grapes; hoping to get enough to make jam again.

Hmmm, maybe mine aren't concord grapes, then.

From: [identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com
Hmmm...I donno. There are so many different varietals of grapes now. I shouldn't wonder if the flavor of the grapes depends greatly upon the ph of the soil

My bad

I think it was my naivete back then that decided they were concords. My godmother had a trellis of them when I was a child, and these smelled just the same (you know how smells can take you back in time?). Whatever these are, they're wild. Of course, I can't see the leaves now, but they're either the "silverleaf grape" or the "New England grape" (looking at Trees and Shrubs of New England), and both are said to have an "acid taste."

OK, I'll shut up now and let you get back to work!

The Indian Strawberry s a member of family Rosacea (rose) like cherry trees....
they are a useful ground cover, the fruit is edible, if not tasty.. and they attract birds....

the fruits are often useful as a garnish.

sounds better than "yard grass" to me. good luck on the CD shrink wrapping..

Well, it's certainly better than the crap-weed that came from the bird feeder (I think.)

The shrink-wrapping is easy; I take it all to Sertomas who employ the handicapped and then I go and pick them up when the job is done.

The Elder's site has them as being there April 10--I'd be guessing that means it's at least close to being open! I'm pretty sure the Elders wouldn't put it up on their site unless they have a contract.

Well shite, we can't go because that's when we're heading for Scarby.

Granny's Attic IS still open, but they are random on their times. It was hit and miss when I was at NSU in 2004, and the principal hasn't changed since. Give it some time, it will wake up in the summer.

Wonderful to finally hear some definitive news on the place! It would be the perfect place for Queen's Gambit to play; now I just need to find out to whom to send a press package!

I would suggest contacting Joe Mack from The Current.
He knows who is in charge of what's what, and can probably spot some great venues as well.

I will send you his email. Just tell him Rae sent you.
