I love Gmail links with my email account. I find some of the niftiest stuff there.


This morning it was a link to an interview with Dick Van Dyke. Now anybody know knows me at all, knows how much I adore him; what an amazing man, performer and human being. There are three comedians I idolize; Dick Van Dyke, Red Skelton and Danny Kaye. Yeah, LOVE!

Mom and I used to watch the Dick Van Dyke show together and Red Skelton and any Danny Kaye movie we could find. Lovely memories!

Yes, I do. Nice guy but without that 'spark' that Dick has. I never could really get into that show, unfortunately.

One of the first stage pieces I ever saw as a child was The Music Man at the Pantages with Dick in the title role. He was amazing.

And Red was one of my mom's favorites. He was pointed out to me in a Hawaii airport my first time there - he was wheelchair bound and in town for an art showing of his work. I remember only because I knew I had to tell my mom all about it when we got home (I was vacationing with aunt and uncle).

Yes!! I have seen that. I used to have a page on MySpace for my Pin-up, and I had Danny Kaye's "Bread and Butter Woman" playing...love that song.

He was the true package. Singing, dancing, acting, comedy...he had it all.

Wow, I didn't realize he played the old banker (and I've seen it as recently as this weekend, because I have a 7 year old daughter).

I saw a great speech he gave when he was at the dedication of a street named after him, and he told the story of how he met Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy), who was aged and retired at that point, and was given the famous bow tie Laurel always wore in the movies. And he wore it to the dedication. I'll admit, that choked me up just a touch.

Dick hails from Danville, IL, and Red from Vincennes, IN, about an hour's drive south. My parents were from smack in between, the Robinson, IL area.

If you can make it up to Branson, Tom Mullica does a tribute show to Red Skelton. I know the man that has been managing Tom for the last ten years and I've seen the show too. Red's widow even said it was like having Red back for just a little while.

Yes, I've seen the billboards for it. I'm pretty much allergic to Branson (I don't DO crowds or tourist-y stuff unless I'm PAID to be there!) but for that, I might have to make an exception.
